Category: philosophy/religion topics
so, I was looking through this board, and it says "philosophy religion topics: but I see mostly religious ones. Since I am a philosophy major and have a deep interest, great love, and some understanding of philosophy I thought I would start some threads on philosophy. I hope we can focus mostly on philosophy even if it intersects with religions. but, when I say philosophy, a lot of people are confused about what that is. Most don't even think about it, I mean, how many engage in truth seeking, life examining, and deep thoughts throughout the day? I don't know of many, I do it all the time but well, not everyone, and not everyone is too conscious about mind all the time. but what is it and how is it useful?
well, philosophy basically just means friend of wisdom. and philosophy seeks to find out the whys and the hows.
form:
what is virtue? how can we be virtuous? what is justice? how can we be most just? what is piety? how do we be most pious? What is wisdom? how can we be wisest? What is the nature of humans? are we born naturally evil or virtuous? are we born with ideas or as John locke says tabula rasa?" a blank slate/as a white piece of paper? what is happiness, sadness, pain, joy, satisfaction? how do we achieve these? what is life? what is the purpose of living?
metaphysics:
can we rationally confirm the existence that we live in or is it all relative? does existence exist? is A really A?
epistemology:
how do we know what we know? how do we know what love is? our purpose to life? how do we know form? how do we know that someone is friends with us? how do we know if we are just? how do we know we are acting justly?
ethics:
if someone acts unjustly against us what is it right to act unjustly back?
politics:
what constitutes a government? how do people keep order? what is so bad about dictators and tyrants?
aesthetics:
what does it mean to have beuty? how does a piece of art have such budy? what gives a piece of art that beauty?
these are just some questions, but it is all the theories in all the fields mostly. asking such questions. philosophy is a fundamental science and without it, sciences, and a lot of other things that requires thought would not be possible or as rich.
